UNOE General Meeting – February 2018

Join us for our February General Meeting on
Thurs., Feb. 22 – 6:30pm
at the C.K. Newsome Center.
Our guest speaker will be Meg Connolly, with the League of Women Voters of Southwestern Indiana, as she focuses on efforts to curb gerrymandering and to promote redistricting reform in Indiana.

– Every 10 years, following the census, the constitution says states are to look at changes in population distribution and, if necessary, redraw legislative districts for US Representatives. States also look at district lines for state legislators. The next census is in 2020.

– Since we have been drawing lines for legislative districts, parties (or groups drawing the lines) have tried to do so to maximize their own influence on the legislature. This is known as gerrymandering.

– During the 2018 Indiana Legislative Session there will be discussion of Redistricting and a new Senate Bill: SB 136. Be an informed constituent.

MEETING FEATURES

UNOE ANNUAL ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Nominations are open until the time of voting during the General Meeting. If you have someone from your neighborhood to nominate as an Officer with the Board of Directors of UNOE, contact the office staff at office@unoevansville.org or 812-428-4243.

GUEST SPEAKER

Mike Labitzke, the Deputy Director Utilities, with the City’s Program Management Office. Mike will be sharing information about the 2018 Projects with the Water Replacement Program for the City-wide Distribution System.

Refresh Evansville is a long-term strategy to replace aging water mains and supporting infrastructure.

The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility maintains 1,000 miles of water lines within the system, of which 600 miles are cast-iron pipes with an average age of over 90 years. These are now at or past their life expectancy.

Refresh Evansville will take decades to complete, but these ongoing annual improvements will ensure that our children and future generations will continue to enjoy safe, clean drinking water.
